Title

Narrative Card: Timeline - First Alarm to Fire Under Control

Description

At approximately 12:35pm the first Alarm was sounded alerting the Jacksonville Fire Department. The fibre factory was fully engulfed in flames and collapsed, spreading burning embers to nearby structures and, by 1:00pm, the fire was racing through downtown uncontrolled. Multiple fire crews were assembled from as far away as Georgia to help put out the flames. From 2:00pm to 7:30pm the fire was uncontained and destroyed commercial, municipal, private, and religious structures over hundreds of blocks in downtown. By the late evening the wind, that amplified the fire’s spread, died down. This allowed firefighters to gain control of the fire, eventually extinguishing the last of the flames by morning.
